How to lose fat while still eating injera

You don't have to give up Ethiopian food to lose weight. Here's how to build a fat-loss plate around injera.

Injera is often blamed for weight gain, but teff is a nutritious whole grain rich in fibre and iron. The problem is rarely injera itself — it's the portion size and what sits on top of it.

1. Measure your injera

One medium injera is roughly 180 kcal. For most fat-loss plans, one per meal is plenty. Roll the extra and save it for tomorrow's firfir.

2. Fill half the plate with vegetables

Gomen, atkilt wot and timatim salad add volume and fibre for very few calories.

3. Prioritise protein

Add chicken tibs, lean kitfo, eggs or fish. Protein keeps you full and protects muscle while you lose fat.

4. Watch the oil and niter kibbeh

Stews can carry a lot of hidden fat. Ask for less oil, or cook at home and measure it with a spoon.

Sustainable fat loss comes from habits you can keep, not from cutting out the foods you love.
